Grand Lodge Appointments

Over the century and a quarter of its existence, it almost seems that a tacit agreement has been in effect between Eureka Lodge and the Grand Lodge, to ignore each other insofar as possible.

On the one hand, Eureka has been recognized by the Grand Lodge very infrequently, with only four of its members ever receiving appointment to Grand Lodge office.

DISTRICT DEPUTY GRAND MASTERS

James M. Smith                  1897-1898

Albert B. Watts Jr.             1954-1955

Arthur C. Frieder               1968-1969

GRAND STEWARD

Albert B. Watts Jr.              1956

GRAND ORGANIST

John W. Chambers             1980-

GRAND REPRESENTATIVE

Arthur C. Frieder               1976-
    (Connecticut)

On the other hand, Eureka Lodge has kept its light well hidden beneath the bushel! It has been poorly represented at the communications of the Grand Lodge. On no less than 30 occasions, Eureka sent no representative at all; on 55 others, it was represented by a Proxy only, with one Brother accounting for 18 and another, 17 of these occasions. The Master of the Lodge has attended only 27 times, and only once in 125 years has the Master and both Wardens attended a session.

Unfortunately the Lodge records do not indicate Grand Offices held in other than Symbolic Masonry. Eureka's present Secretary is a Past Grand Commander of Knights Templar of New Jersey, but otherwise, no other member of Eureka Lodge appears to have held office in a Grand body.

Webmaster note: The "present Secretary" was Bro. Wallace M. Gage, the book's author, who later became Grand Historian of the Grand Lodge of Maine!
